Thanks, Brad! Sounds like a good solution. I dread having to replace our mattress, but will remember this for next time.

It is 2018 and I am struggling with the same dilemma. I purchased a mattress, had delivered and returned using the one time return option, the next mattress arrived and it is equally as uncomfortable as the first mattress but I think we are stuck. Unhappy and do not know what to do with expensive, uncomfortable, new mattress.
I now dread the thought of mattress shopping. This has been a horrible experience for us.

After months of shopping and many stores, I finally gave up and bought the cheapest mattress at Haynes. I hate it. It is so fat, I can't fit any sheets on it. I wanted to return it 2 days later but on the paper work it clearly says no refunds or exchanges. I'm out $540. Uggg. I hate mattress stores.

After extensive research into bed design, we concluded that the mattress is the problem NOT the solution. So we re-invented the bed without a mattress for perfect support and pure sleep for the rest of your life. We have just opened our London sleepscape studio. Visit www.ammique.com to find out more.

Princess and the pea

I cannot sleep on any type of latex mattress, nor could my Mother. Luckily I found a mattress company making mattresses the way they had always made them! With cotton batting. They were not expensive, no hype, just following the family business tradition. But it means hell for when I travel, everyone thinks they have to have the latest topper, memory foam, natural latex etc, etc, in order to provide a good bed. Air Bn'bs, hotels. I ask everyone if they could just give me their oldest mattress, in the hope it doesn't have foam. Thank you for recognising the hype in this industry, when really foam replaced cotton because it was cheaper for them.

Dear Marcie,

Almost 8 years later and your post is still getting comments! Some of them had me laughing out loud, especially bitter Brian--even his frustration with all of us princess-and-the-pea-types is a welcome relief from the turmoil of your own thoughts are the end of another mostly sleepless night. If I may paraphrase him, "Screw you whiners...and God Bless!!!"

I realize this thread is more support group than science, but having myself gone through "mattress hell" over the last three years, I'll offer some quick and helpful links for you and anyone else who has been tormented by mattress shopping.
